Darleen asked: How come you don't grow your hair out long? Because I love it when it comes to your shoulders. What's your cleaning schedule? How do you always stay so organized? And what do you do with scattered paper around the house?
Funny you should ask me why I'm not growing out my hair because I HAVE BEEN growing out my hair for about 9 months now! And funny this question should come from the girl who's hair I envy most in this life! I love Darleen's dark thick curly huge long mass of hair! I wish wish wish it was on my head! But I was blessed with beautiful thin fine hair. Boo hoo. The goal is to have it at least slightly passed my shoulders by June for The Waite Family Reunion! Things really aren't moving along fast in this whole growth process due to the fact that #1.My hair grows s-l-o-w and #2. I'm a firm believer in it "takes two steps forward and one step back". You see, I can't just let my hair grow free willy! I have to cut a style as the months pass. Therefor it takes a while... does anyone get that? Here's how long it is as of today...
Uh, my cleaning schedule? This just happens to be one of my New Year's Resolutions. I was motivated even more by reading this post. (one of my other Resolutions is to - have dinner on the table every night - which was motivated by this post).
I think I learned how to keep a clean house from my mother, who is literally The Queen of Clean! I still have a lot to learn from this woman, but one thing I know from watching my mom... keeping a clean house takes a lot of work! Especially now that I have children, my cleaning schedule has become a little too relaxed. My mother had a schedule every day of the week which she followed. I remember often enough coming home from school with the front door locked. My mother was home, I could see her in the window, down on her hands and knees, scrubbing the floors. So the door being locked meant, I better go around and come in the back door, where I wouldn't disturb the cleaning process.
For some reason I hate to admit I work so much better on a schedule. I wish I could be care free and not so uptight, but I am more calm, happy, and more lovable when my family is on a routine. A schedule does nothing for me unless I follow it.
But that said...
Here is my cleaning schedule, whether I always stick to it will just be between my-sometimes-unfortunately-living-in-dirt-but-awfully-cute family & me!
The Every Days:
Wake up-make bed.
During Breakfast-empty dishwasher... so I have a dishwasher ready to fill during the day.
Before bed-clean kitchen (table top, counter tops, stove top, sink) and have dish washer running. ( I have to insert here that my boyfriend is really great at usually doing the dishes each night!)
Monday:
Laundry Day!-Spend all day doing loads and loads of laundry (this is what works for me) We stay home and hang out in pj's with no makeup on or our hair combed... so don't come over on Mondays please. While I'm looking my not so best, I might as well do the bathrooms too.
Tuesday:
Floor Day!-Sometime during the day I need to vacuum, sweep, and maybe mop the floors. I should dust before hand also.
Wednesday:
Get it Done Day!-Meaning I try to get what ever needs to be deep cleaned or organized accomplished. For example: de-clutter a cabinet, organize a closet, clean off the computer desk, clean under that certain something with a toothbrush this time!
Thursday:
Free Day!-Eden has preschool this day, so Ava and I get the day off to run errands, shop, or hang out at home.
Friday:
Menu planning day and hopefully do the grocery shopping. Also wash the sheets and bedding because I can't fit it all in on Monday.
Saturday:
Of course it's a free day! Especially if Dad happens to have the day off too!!!
Sunday:
Ah, relax. (kind of)
So as I was typing out my cleaning schedule, I started to get pretty nervous revealing this whole thing... what if I'm totally forgetting a cleaning "thing" that really should be done, but apparently I don't do it and now I've unknowingly announced it to the whole blogging world?
I loath scattered paper and anything of the like! It seems to be my nemesis! I can't seem to get this problem under control. It never ends, it never stops! I have tried so many different things with just piles of papers to show for it! So I'm asking all of you out there! Please help with this one. Hmmm, and now that I think about it, I might know a few of you personally, who I believe are extremely organized and smart... so if you would be so kind, I'm passing along the following plaguing question to:
You, you, you, and totally you ~"What do you do with the scattered paper around the house?"
But those were only the people I knew would be okay to single out-because I know for sure they have answers... but if anyone else has the answers then please, do tell! I shall waite patiently.
(I am patient, but I just don't wait slow!)

First I think that your hair looks longer than the last time that I saw you. Good right? Second, I don't like to have stacks of paper lying about because I am annal retentive. So most of the time I throw it away. For the stuff that I need we file it in a box. We keep all of our reciepts which is a little unnessesary (but has come in helpful) for a year. We put the reciepts in stacks in a drawer set aside for that. But other than that, Garbage Garbage Garbage.
First off you gave me inspiration to START making a list every week what needs to be done!! I try every day to do a little bit at a time and it seems like I'm so tired by the end of the day b/c I did too much! Thanks for the advise on that.
So I'm like the person above.
I throw away every too. I keep my kids "special" art projects in a rubber maid container with their name on it and their cute art work/special homework in a scrapbook for them.
Mail.. I have a shredder in the office and that's the first thing I do shred everything I don't need and the rest goes to recycle.
I have a filing cabinet and that is where all the important papers go and it is organized by color.
I hope that helps??? {hope some of that helps}
P.S. Love the hair & the vinyl lettering you are standing behind!!!!
p.s. so I didn't go back and read what I put at the end of my comment and I guess I got carried away with "I hope this helps" lol :)
I'm a big believer in the O.H.I.O. method - only handle it once. Don't just shuffle the papers around from place to place - put them where they need to go the first time and be done with it.
Plus, like everyone else has said, THROW STUFF AWAY!
I love the sepia photo of you...too cute! And I love your hair length!
I love that you have a routine, they are so necessary. And that is quite an impressive cleaning schedule, I could take lessons from you.
I am a pack rat, so I have no advice on the paper mess. I try my best to recycle, however it just keeps cycling right back into my house.
And yes, Darleen has lovely hair :). I envy it too, it's thick. My hair is fine too, I just have a lot of it so it looks full.
And I have hair issues that date way back. My mom always cut my hair short, Boy short! She loved the curls it would make- I cried and wanted to look like a girl so bad- So when I was about seven years old she let me grow it out. I have only had it cut above my shoulders once- after I had Meghan. Ever since I go every 3 months for 2-3 inches to keep it healthy. Issues.
I have paper issues too. J.Paul says I'm the queen of "stacks". I just seem to move the junk from one stack to another. But I really enjoyed the OHIO rule. I must try...Gotta go sort through my stacks.
Thanks for the insight on the paper mess. I too envy such hair as Darleen's.
You singled ME out?? Just because I wash my dishes before I put them in the dishwasher doesn't mean I have a clean house! But I actually do have an answer that I got from my friend Elise, who is the queen of clean AND organization. I'm still perfecting it, but here's the method: You get one of those plastic expandable/accordian file folders with month tabs inside. Then every time you get the mail or other papers, you throw away or shred what you don't want, and EVERYTHING else that you do want to keep goes into the expandable file under the current month! And you just keep it there until you're sure you don't need it anymore, so I guess I should purge mine every few months. I have a separate mini one for receipts. You could have a separate one for coupons, too, but I just put all mine in the front of the folder. I also keep the checkbook, stamps, and a pen in there.
It doesn't solve ALL paper problems--like Julia's school work, kids' drawings, etc.--but it takes care of the majority of it when I stay on the ball with it!
Oooo...your hair is longer than the last time I saw it. It looks pretty! And I had no idea your hair grows slow. The times that your hair was a little longer, I just thought it was fun to see a different style. I'm so excited you posted your cleaning schedule--I am adopting it and I hope it will make my life a little more cleaner. I have a problem of not clearing out the dishwasher in the morning so my sink and counters builds up throughout the day with dirty dishes. I need to get this down. Fun to read.
Love the picture of you, very cute.
Carolyn, you're too cute. I have to have a routine-otherwise I waste my time away on the computer. Monday is my laundry day as well-it's always Mt. Everest over here on Mondays.
Every time I grow my hair out, I cave in by the time it gets to my shoulders and then vow to never do that again.
As for the paper-I know what you mean. I use one of Randy's shoe boxes (he wears a size 13, so it's gigantic) and I throw all of my important stuff that I need to file away in there. I usually wait until it's pouring over before I actually file (about every 6 months or so). I have a little hiding spot in the kitchen that I hide coupons and things like that-so it appears that I'm clutter free. I throw all of Randy's papers from school in a pile one of the hall shelves and then threaten his life every six months or so to throw it out.
I recycle everything else. I even throw away (gasp!) a lot of Andrew's worksheets from preschool & Primary. The worthy ones, I keep in a three-ring binder or in a banker's box.
I loved Becky's idea about the accordian file, I might have to try that.
