Memories While Sewing

Grandma Bunny was my paternal grandmother.  She was the only grandparent I knew.  The others had already passed away.  She lived with us for a couple of years when I was twelve or thirteen.  I remember that dress.  I called it her "angel dress" because the accordion sleeves looked like angel wings to me when Grandma held out her arms.

Grandma was always working with her hands.  Sewing, crocheting, crafting.  She could make anything she imagined.  I thought a lot about her while working on my pillow.  I always wished I would have taken Grandma up on her offer to teach me how to crotchet.  At the time, my twelve year old brain didn't want to hold still for that lesson.
It was nice to spend those moments sewing and thinking of her.  I thought about how she met Grandpa Cherry (called that because his hair was red) in Canada while he served his mission.  Grandma Bunny was the baby in her family and she was used to having things provided for her when it was needed.
After marrying Grandpa, she moved down south to a tiny little town in Southern Utah.  Alton Utah.  Grandma started her married life during the Great Depression.  She ended up having 11 children, and had to teach herself how to be a provident provider.
My pillow reminds me of her.  I love that.
At my sewing station, I'm reminded of a couple other people I love.  My flower pin cushion made by a dear friend in medical school.  I get to think of her every time I pull out a pin.  Speaking of those pins, they used to be my mother's, along with so many of my sewing tools.  She gave me my sewing machine when I was first married, and she threw in her old sewing notions to go with it.  Thanks Mom... I'm finally putting some use to them!

Wonderful girl! It all looks artistic with your great color choices and also I can imagine therapeutic! What a great project. I am trying to dream up a baby girl quilt!! I'll be thinking of you piecing those amazing colors together. I can only see red and pink coming together for our Elizabeth. I am trying out names to see what really fits for our baby. She is starting to move and really become a part of this experience for me. Before, it seemed like she was a more passive participant. Love you crafty mistress!

What a lovely post. I remember that dress too! And that she always wore such fabulous jewelry. And every time I see the city at night with all the lights twinkling on a sea of black velvet, it reminds me of the christmas trees she used to make by gluing jewels and sparkles to velvet covered boards to make it shimmer.
